5 Steps to Creating a Energized Vision Statement
How many times have you been asked, what is your vision?
Many people feel like they are not imaginative enough to come up with a vision statement for the dream life. Perhaps you are one of them. Maybe you don’t “see” pictures in your mind so you think you can’t visualize. However, if I asked you to think of your bedroom, you could probably conjure up a picture, in your mind, of your bedroom.
Today I’m going to go over 5 simple steps to help you start envisioning you a life you would love.
1. What are your core values?
The first step in producing a stellar vision statement is to know what you value. You can find plenty of values lists all over the internet. I like this one. It is comprehensive, but not overwhelming. Choose from 3 to 5 values that really resonate with you. These values are the deeply held beliefs that guide your behavior. We make our most important decisions based on our values. As you read through the examples, ask yourself, “What is most important to me?”
2. What are you passionate about?
For years I thought I must be missing something because I didn’t think I was passionate about anything. This dilemma came out of the confusion between passion and purpose. Passion is the internal fire that raises our vibration; those things that excite and energize you. What brings you joy? Some of my passions are creating beautiful spaces, helping others restore their health, and expressing my creativity through dancing, singing, and gardening.
Take a moment and think about the things you would do all day if time and money were no object. Those are your passions.
3. What are your personal assets?
Personal assets are unique to you. They are your gifts, talents, skills, and characteristics. What do people say you are good at? Ask yourself this question, “Given my interests, talents, skill, and gifts, in what way do I make this world a better place?”
Some of my assets are singing, speaking, organizing, planning, and fixing things.
4. What is your legacy?
How do you want to be remembered? When you lay your head down for the last time, what qualities and characteristics will people remember you for? What outstanding accomplishments will you have made? Think of this as writing your own eulogy….Here lies ______________ he/she was kind to animals and loved everyone; never expressed a negative word to others and spread joy wherever he/she went…You get the idea!
5. Write out a purpose statement
Review the last 4 steps and ask yourself these questions: “What does this tell me about myself?” “What is my purpose?” Take a few deep breathes in and quiet your mind to listen. Write down anything that comes to mind without self-editing. Next, re-read and refine it into 2-3 sentences. Your purpose statement is something you want to be able to remember and recite to yourself and others at any time. Keep it simple.
So now what? You can read part 2 here where we fit all this valuable self-knowledge into your vision.
