Take Time to Hibernate
Sometimes you just need to find a cave and chill…
Plants go dormant, animals hibernate. Winter is the perfect time to slow down, release tension and relax. When plants and animals are dormant, they are storing up energy for the active days of spring and summer. If we take a cue from nature, it would be good to stop all the rushing around and allow our bodies to rest and heal.
For a weekend, try following your circadian rhythm and go to bed with the sun and don’t rise again until the new dawn shines in the window. Many times we feel guilty for “sleeping in”, but that is exactly what your body needs during the dark hours of winter. Winter relaxing is also a great time to eat light enjoying soups and teas instead of heavy meals of steak and potatoes. If you are looking for a little spiritual insight this time of year, a light fast or cleanse could be just the thing.
Another wonderful practice to study during this hibernation season in breath-work. As you slow down your breathing, all parts of the body begin to relax with the breath. You can find many different breathing techniques by doing a quick google search. One of my favorites is Samantha Skelly‘s breath-work site. There are also some great breathing meditations on Insight Timer.
You might have noticed if the weather is chilly and it’s grey outside, you just want to snuggle up with a good book and a hot beverage. Listen to your instincts and practice the art of hibernation this lovely winter season. You’ll come out in spring as bright as a daisy.
